I studied art history in Cape Town and spent my early years working at some of South Africa's finest auction houses, Stephan Welz among them. Every week something extraordinary would come through the door. Every week I'd watch people light up at the sight of it.
Then I turned 21 and went to Europe. The architecture, the museums, the incredibly old furniture — something settled in me. This was the world I wanted to live in.
What I noticed, though, was that the auction world has always felt exclusive. Intimidating. Like it belongs to a certain kind of person. I've never believed that.
